A six-point checklist that prevents 90% of print errors before they happen.
Before sending any file to a printer, run through this checklist:
1. File format: AI, EPS, or high-res PNG (300 DPI at print size)? If not, fix it before sending.
2. Fonts outlined: All text must be converted to outlines/paths. Missing fonts cause text reflow or substitution on the printer's system.
3. Color mode: RGB for DTG is fine; CMYK for screen printing. Know which process you're using.
4. Background transparency: No white boxes behind your design on colored garments. The PNG must have a transparent background.
5. Bleed and clearance: Your design should have at least 0.25" of clearance from all crop marks and stay within printable area guidelines (your printer will specify).
6. Final approval: A signed-off PDF mockup from your printer showing the design placed on the actual garment color. Don't approve production without this.
Sending a file and saying "you know what I mean" is how print errors happen and refund arguments start. The checklist is your protection and your printer's.
