Standard placement zones, how size affects impact, and why the most effective apparel designs are almost always simpler than the client wants.
Design placement and size are creative decisions that affect both aesthetics and cost. Knowing the standard zones helps you brief your designer and understand your invoice.
Left chest: 3–4" wide. The classic logo placement. Professional, understated. Works on almost any garment.
Full front: 10–12" wide (adult), centered 3" below collar. The primary real estate. Maximum visual impact.
Back center: 12–14" wide, centered. Strong for event shirts. Often paired with left chest on front.
Sleeve: 3–4" wide, perpendicular to sleeve seam. Popular for premium programs and streetwear.
Bottom hem: 1–2" wide. Brand mark placement: subtle, distinctive.
The most common mistake: too many elements, too much text, too many colors. Apparel is viewed at a distance, in motion, in variable lighting. Simple, bold, high-contrast designs outperform complex, detailed ones every time. The best branded apparel you've ever seen probably had 2 colors and one clear focal point.
